Week 21 – Read-Aloud Summary

Are You My Mother?

A mother bird sat on her egg, and her egg jumped. She thought the egg would hatch today and she also thought the bird would want to eat. So off she flew. The egg jumped, and jumped, and jumped, and jumped. And then, out came a baby bird. And he said, “Where is my mother? I must find her.”

He closed his eyes and walked with his eyes closed and then, down, down, down, he fell. He walked right past his mother and didn’t notice her but soon he came to a cat, then a hen, then a dog, then a cow. And they all said, “I’m not your mother.” He called to a car, a boat, a bulldozer, but they were not his mother. The bulldozer dropped him right in his nest and soon his mother came. His mother said, “Do you know who I am?” He said, “Yes, I know who you are, you’re not a cat, or a hen, or a dog, or a cow, or a car, or a boat, or a bulldozer, you are a bird and you are my mother!”

Week 20 – Story Narration

The Bears’ Picnic

Father Bear says, “Mother Bear, put your apron away. We are going to go on a picnic today.”  So Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Little Bear go out to look for a picnic spot. The first spot was next to a train track and when they put down their things the smoke went on them so went to another spot. That spot was no good because there was too many people and when they left people kept hitting them with their food that they were throwing away. So they went across the river on a raft and they went to a spot that looked nice. Papa Bear said, “Lay out the picnic things, my dear!” But then all the garbage fell on them so they had to leave. The next spot was too high and a noisy jet flew over them. The next spot was on a cliff, and it started to rain and so Papa Bear went into a cave and Papa said, “It’s dry in here. And warm, too.” Mama Bear and Little Bear left the cave. Then lighting hit the cave and made it blast open. Mother Bear said, “It looks much much too warm for me!”  Papa Bear came running down and followed them and said, “I have the best picnic, you’ll see!” And he followed them all the way home, up the front steps, and into their house and said, “This is the kind of place I mean!”  And they had their picnic at home. The end.

Story Starter: Bill and Sue played together in the sandbox. They built roads for their cars and trucks. They added sticks as trees. Then, it began to rain.

The roads they built for their cars and trucks broke. It was a big, heavy rain that washed away all the roads in the sandbox. And they picked up their cars and trucks and ran inside. They were too scared that they ran inside and jumped into the bath to get cleaned up. When they were cleaned up, they dried themselves and then ran to the other room and jumped into their beds.

Week 14 – Story Starter (The Gap)

Once there were two boys, Nathan and Gabe. They were looking for home and wandered into a forest. They hoped a giant wouldn’t find them and eat them.  The wandered around the forest and got lost even more. Then, they saw a nice giant who said, “Welcome to my house. I will feed you so you don’t get hungry.” The giant kept asking them questions. The next morning he kept asking them questions. This morning he finally let them eat. Then they went outside the giant’s house and saw a tree. The giant said he wanted to cut it down and make more room for his garden, but it was a magic tree and when he tried to cut it down, the tree went higher instead of falling down. Now there was a gap between the stump and the rest of the tree. He asked Nathan and Gabe if the tree was really magic. Nathan started looking at the stump and said, “It must be magic!” They went back in the house and said, “Can we have some more food?” The giant didn’t like their answer or question and he turned into a bad giant and smoothed them. The end.

Pat built a house. The house collapsed.

Pat built out a house out of sand on the beach. He put sand on the roof and then he put shingles on the roof to keep the sand from falling off the roof. Then, as soon as he built the house, the house collapsed.  It was blowing a strong wind and it was raining. The house collapsed because he built it out of sand and shingles.

Week 12 – Chore Training (How to Put the Dishes Away)

After breakfast, lunch and dinner we wash the dishes by putting them in the dishwasher. When the dishwasher is full we run the dishwasher. When it’s done we put the dishes away. Our dishes go in the cupboard, and the cutlery goes in the drawer with the knives. First you take the cutlery basket and carry it over to the counter on top of the cutlery drawer. Then you take the forks and put them with the other forks. You make sure you put the small ones with the small ones and the big ones with the big ones. Now you put the little spoons with the other little spoons and the big spoons with the other big spoons. Be careful with the knives, be sure you dont’t cut yourself. Only hold the handles, not the pointy part. Then you put the basket back in the dishwasher. I stack the dishes on the counter then Mama and Daddy put them in the cupboard because I’m not tall enough to reach. Then you closes the dishwasher. The end.
