Benny (the little boy), Henry (the big boy), Jesse (the big girl), and Violet (the small girl) lived in a boxcar, that’s why they were called the boxcar children. They found wood in the boxcar and that’s what they built a shelf out of. But guess what? Henry worked for the doctor and he was cleaning up his garage and he found some bent nails. He asked the doctor if he could have them and the doctor let him have them and a hammer. Henry (the big boy) wanted good nails so he banged the bent sides of the bad nails to straighten them out and now he had some really good nails. He used the good nails to make a cart and with the cart they carried branches to make a dam to make the pool deeper. They liked the pool and went swimming it one day.

Week 4 – Recollection (Greenfield Village)
I’m going to tell you about Greenfield Village (that’s a pretty big name, isn’t it?)
When we went to Greenfield Village we all went on the train ride. I liked the train ride. We went to see the whole Greenfield Village because we went all the way around. We sat at the front and we saw where it carried the coal. It was noisy and I did not like the smell. I did not like the smoke because I thought it was going to make me sick because there was so much smoke. It started going slow then faster and faster and faster and faster. It was a long ride.
When the train ride was over we went on a horse ride. The horse ride was fun and I felt the wagon jerk a little bit because I thought the horse was galloping, but it did not go as fast as it does when it usually gallops.
When the horse ride was over we went on a Model T ride. It was fun and there was no seat belt and it must have been easy for mommies and daddies to get people out and we wouldn’t have to say, “You forgot to do my bottom buckle!” because there are no buckles. I got to sit up at the front in the Model T ride with my brother Gabe (and I love Gabe).
The End.
Week 3 – Dictate Dialog (I Wish I Had a Nickel)
“I wish I had a nickel,” said Nathan.
“You can’t,” said Daddy. “Because it’s a penny that is a nickel and Emmy can eat the penny.”
“Oh, I really want it, because I haven’t had one before. I would want to buy a toy oven with the nickel.”
“You still can’t have it. You know why? Because you might forget to put it in your piggy bank.”
“Well, I don’t even have a piggy bank!”
“If you really want a piggy bank, you’ll have to have a nickel to buy a piggy bank.”
“I’ll just have to get a job and start earning money.”
“You still can’t have it,” said Daddy.
The End.
Week 2 – Family Portrait
Our family likes to walk and we also like to read. We like to snuggle, especially when we first wake up. We walk a lot to the park, and when we go to Greenfield Village or the Zoo. We love to read about animals like apes and monkeys.
Week 1 – Pat the Rat
Pat the Rat is a fat rat and he wears a hat on his head. He wears a big fat shirt because Pat the Rat is fat. His tummy is as big as a watermelon. Pat the Rat just lays on his mat! He also has a big grin and he has a stick in his hand to help him walk. Nat sat on Pat. Nat is a fat, fat cat. Then he sat on his hat and flattened the hat. And he sat on his big fat tummy. Pat the Rat said, “Hey, get off me!” And Pat was flat and his hat was flat too. Then Nat got off Pat. Pat was not flat, and his hat wasn’t flat either!
That’s the end of the story.
