LA Week 11 – Interview a Character

An Interview with Henry.

“Hi Henry, tell our audience who you are.”

“I’m a squirrel and live at Heartwood Hotel in Fernwood Forest. It’s a tree with a secret door in the shape of a heart on the trunk.”

“Tell me about something funny that happened to you.”

“I was playing and I was thrown high into the sky by my dad.”

“Has your dad ever dropped you?”

“No. He’s always caught me.”

“What is your favorite toy?”

“My favorite toy is my coconut ball I got from Mr. Heartwood.”

“What do you do with a coconut ball?”

“I can play catch with my sister Tilly.”

“What is your favorite book?”

“My favorite book is The Guest Diaries. They are fun to look at.”

“Why are they fun to look at?”

“Because they can tell me what guests visited and stayed here at Heartwood Hotel.”

“Tell me about your hobbies.”

“I play with my sister Tilly and love to explore and run about.”

“What is your favorite holiday?”

“My favorite holiday is the St. Slumber festival. There is a party and tons of fun.”

“What is the St. Slumber festival?”

“It’s a festival right at the end of fall before winter. That’s why they call it St. Slumber.”

“What’s the most exciting thing you’ve done lately?”

“The most exciting thing I’ve done lately is skating with Mona, Tilly, and Strawberry.”

“Did you ever fall on the ice?”

“I fell a few times but got help from Mona, Tilly, and Strawberry to skate better.”

“Thank you very much Henry. You’re a very energetic squirrel and I’m sure lots of boys and girls would love to play with you.”

Week 29 – Write the Short Story

Dirt-Grenades

Jack grinned. The dirt was perfect! Dry enough to hold together in clumps, but also loose enough to explode into clouds of dust on impact. He was going to win this fight! He had challenged his friend Gavin to a dirt-grenade fight and he was playing to win. He checked his slingshot. Then he started to collect dirt-grenades. He looked up. He hadn’t realized that he had gone so far from the fort! Gavin would be here any minute! He dashed towards the fort. When he got to the fort he reached for his slingshot to load it, but it wasn’t there! He saw it lying on the ground, outside the fort! He ran to get it. He dashed back to the fort and, looking over his shoulder, saw Gavin coming around the corner! He loaded his sling and prepared to let loose with every dirt-grenade he had! Then a sight made him stop in his tracks!

Gavin was charging, as he had expected, but he was dressed in his Sunday best! His mom was proud of those clothes and he would get in big trouble with his mother if he got them dirty. So he couldn’t fire a single dirt-grenade at Gavin while Gavin pelted him with them until Jack was covered in a dull brown dust. When the battle was over and it was time for Gavin to go, he was still upset and slouched on the front porch. He glanced at Gavin and saw a smirk of triumph flicker across his face. Then Gavin turned around and said, “Sorry about the way I won. It wasn’t fair.” “It’s all right. I was at fault too. I shouldn’t have been upset at you.” And the two friends forgave each other and had many other, actual, dirt fights.

Week 15 – My Perfect Pet

My perfect pet is a black cat! This cat would have lots of energy to chase me as I run with its toys. It would help around the house by catching rats and mice. And it would clean off our plates. We would just have to wash off the slobber. This cat would be fun and a helper. We would have to make a cat bed and it would sleep beside me. I would name her Emma.

But Mommy and Daddy won’t let us get any pets! If only I could convince them!

Week 27 – Living in Historical Times

Sophia is imagining that she is Venicius’ daughter Claudia who lives in Rome.

It is hard for me to read and write because only the boys are allowed to go to school in Rome. I stay at home with my mother and take care of the house. I wish I could go to the baths and play in the swimming pool. I’m also not allowed to go and watch the gladiators or the horses racing at the circus. It’s not fun being a little girl in Rome. Too bad I’m not a boy in Rome.

Week 24 – You Are the Teacher!

Today Sophia will teach us how a siphon works!

A siphon is when water goes up a tube and land out the other side. Water normally runs down, but in a siphon it runs up!

For a siphon you need water in a tube and water in a cup. Then you put one end of the tube in the cup and the other end of the tube into the sink. This makes the water go up the tube and down into the sink. It’s very important that the cup is higher than the sink!

LA Week 23 – Finish the Story

Bob and his mother need groceries. They need bananas, bread, and milk. They get in their car and drive to the grocery store. Bob pushes the cart and his mother gets the food.

—————- The following in Sophia’s ending ——————

But there were no bananas, bread, or milk! They were going to make banana bread with bananas, bread, and milk. So they went to the zoo to get bananas from the monkeys. The monkeys tossed them some bananas but the rhinos were on the other side and the bananas fell into the rhino cage! Eek! Then the rhinos bucked the bananas up and they landed on the path. Rhinos don’t like bananas. Bob and his mother picked up the bananas and went looking for bread and milk.

They went to another store that had bread and milk and they bought it and made yummy banana bread. Suddenly they heard the monkeys scream. So they gave one slice to the monkeys.

She also took away all the old books in the school and brought new books. She also bought new pencils and made new books for them. She taught the children how to properly draw “o”‘s so they don’t look like a six.
