Week 15 – Finish the Story

Original Story: Bill and Sue played together in the sandbox. They built roads for their cars and trucks. They added sticks as trees. Then, it began to rain.

And then the sand turned into mud. And then Bill and Sue got stuck in the sandbox because there was mud stuck all over them and it was sticking to the bottom of the sandbox, so they were stuck forever! And then Mom came to check on them and she saw that they were stuck. She tried to get them out but she couldn’t. She realized that they were really stuck. Then she called Daddy and told Daddy that the kids are stuck. Daddy pulled really hard and he got them out. Then they went inside but before they went inside they washed off the mud. The mom and dad took off their clothes and washed them with soap and water. The kids thought that next time they play in the sandbox and they see rain drops they should go inside.

Week 15 – Busiest Day Ever (Calvary Grace Conference)

When I woke up I got dressed in jeans and a shirt that wasn’t a pajama shirt. I got my shoes and jacket on and went straight into the car. It was a special breakfast to eat chocolate sandwiches in the car (I like chocolate). We warmed the engine and went to Calgary (Calvary) Grace. And then we listened to a sermon. I didn’t go downstairs because I was being so foolish and sour. Downstairs they were having fun doing crafts and playing. I tried to go downstairs but my Mom kept on calling me back.

And then I got a little bit hungry. After the sermon I went downstairs to play with Nathan in the class. And then while in the class, I got hungry. And then we stayed there to eat lunch. I ate something for lunch, but I can’t remember what I ate. (After prompting from Nathan…) We ate soup, crackers and cheese, and salad.

After lunch, we watched a Veggie Tales movie. I didn’t like it because it was a little bit scary. Then we went home and on the way home I fell asleep because I had such a busy day!

Week 15 – Be Persuasive (Baby Red Panda)

Dear Daddy,

I know you guys want me to be responsible, and I think taking care of a baby red panda would help me to be responsible. Being responsible means taking care of things well, and I promise I will take care of it well.  I will feed it, bath it, clean up after it, and take it outside when it needs to go potty. It won’t be any extra work for you.  Taking care of a baby red panda will help me appreciate what you do for me.  I’ll use all of my own money to help buy it.  It would be a lot of fun buying a baby red panda, don’t you think so? It would make me feel happier than having the biggest Lego set in the world.  May I please have a baby red panda?

Your Hopeful and Thankful Son,
Nathan

Week 14 – The Gap

K - LA - Week 14Once upon a time, Nathan and Gabe were in a house. One day they went to play in their backyard and then Nathan said, “Come on, lets go play somewhere else. The backyard doesn’t have toys, let’s go somewhere else with toys.” And then they got lost in a forest.

And then they found something wacky. They found a tree, and the top of the tree was not attached to the bottom of the tree. And then Gabe heard an owl and Nathan smelled a skunk. And they kept on looking at the tree. And Nathan put his hand between the tree and the stump. And he tried to pull the tree down but then it lifted him up. And then Nathan heard laughing and he looked at Gabe, but Gabe was not laughing. At the top of the tree there was mouth and eyes and the tree was laughing! Then Nathan jumped down and they found their way back home.

And I’ll tell you who did it, it was an invisible guy hiding in the tree.

The end.

Week 14 – Creative Expression (Short Story)

The Army

At the edge of the forest, there was a cottage.  One spring morning the boy who lived in the cottage with his mother was playing Lego. The only other person in his family besides his mother was his sister, Sally. The boy was named Josh. He had always wanted to have army Lego pieces for his favourite thing was the army.

One day, after breakfast, he ran up to his room to play with his Lego. He was surprised to find that his Lego had turned into real army men! Right in his room! That is a crazy thing to happen.

He told his sister and mother, “There’s army men in my room!”
Mother said, “Oh stop. You’re trying to fool me.”
Josh cried, “Mother! My Lego really has turned into army men! It has!”
Mother said very sternly, “Go back to your room, Josh.”

Josh cried all the way back to his room.  When he got back to his room, the army men asked him,”Why do you have so much Lego? Do you even fight?”
“No,” said Josh, “I don’t fight in the army.” The army men said, “Then why are you wearing a camouflage shirt and pants and backpack?” Josh said, “Because I like to pretend to be army men.”

Meanwhile, Mother heard all the talking upstairs and thought, “Sally is outside, but I hear a lot of unfamiliar voices upstairs. Maybe Josh was right after all, maybe there are arm men in his bedroom!”  She went upstairs, and sure enough, there they were, standing and talking to Josh. She was so surprised that she just stood there with her mouth open.

Finally, the army men had to go. Josh was sad to see them go, but he knew that they had a good job to do so he said his goodbyes and they left. After they left, Mother said to Josh, “I’m sorry that I didn’t believe you.” And Josh said, “I forgive you, Mother.”  Then Mother asked, “How did your Lego turn into army men anyway?” “I don’t know,” said Josh, “but I’ll tell you who did it – it was an invisible magician!” This time, Mother believed Josh.

The end.

Week 13 – Make Up a Song

Gabe’s song, to the tune of Happy Birthday

We play Battleship.
It’s the most fun game.
Normally I lose.
And that makes me pout!

Mommy’s song, to the tune of Itsy Bitsy Spider

We like to play battleship, my brother and I.
Nathan normally wins, and that makes me cry!
Mommy said keep playing and just try harder.
And so I did and blew his ships out of the water.

Week 13 – Story Elaboration

Original story: Pat built a house. The house collapsed.

Pat built a house and it was made of pasta. The pasta was stuck together with glue because he thought that would make it stronger than bricks. He made it in the middle of the forest because he wanted to live where he could see animals. One day Pat was in the house and it fell down. He realized pasta wasn’t very strong, so he decided to get some bricks and build another house out of bricks. That one stayed up forever and Pat saw some animals just like he always wanted to.

Week 12 – Chore Training

It’s mine and my brother’s job to clear the table after we are done eating. First, you bring the dishes off the table (use both hands so that they don’t drop and break) and put them on the counter beside the sink. Don’t forget to bring the glasses, too! If there is siracha or ketchup bottles you don’t put them on the counter but put them back where they go, even mustard and relish. The placemats are wiped with a cloth, then after they are dry you put them away in their drawer. It would be silly to put them in the dishwasher! Clearing the table is a hard job if you are sour, but it’s easy if you’re sweet. So please do it sweetly.

Week 11 – The Cat Book

K - LA - Week 11 - 01
One day, Matt the Cat went to the beach. He brought his toy boat, and a pail. He built a big castle and a moat around it.

K - LA - Week 11 - 02
Matt wanted to sail his boat, but the moat didn’t have any water yet.

K - LA - Week 11 - 03
So he got his pail…

K - LA - Week 11 - 04
and filled it with water from the ocean.

K - LA - Week 11 - 05
He started to go back to his castle. He was very excited, thinking of sailing his boat in the moat, and he didn’t see the umbrella right in front of him!

K - LA - Week 11 - 06
He tripped on the umbrella,

K - LA - Week 11 - 07
His pail flew up and landed on his head. Plunk! All of the water spilled out.

K - LA - Week 11 - 08
He still wanted to sail his boat, so he filled his pail again and sailed his boat in the pail.
